Method Analysis
Leading Towers
I have rung 718 handbell quarters at 84 Coventry Road, Exhall. This is because one of the band, David Allen, is a wheelchair user following a canal boating accident in the mid 1960s and therefore it is most sensible to ring at his house. He is an excellent handbell ringer and had already rung tower bell peals of up to Surprise Maximus in his early 20s before his accident cut short his tower bellringing "career". My first quarter was on 2/12/79, Plain Bob Minor at Roker. It took until 27/3/86 to reach 100, Grandsire Caters at St Oswald Hartlepool. However, after this things took off somewhat! 200 took until 19/12/87, 500 was reached by 30/2/92, 750 by 29/11/94, 1000 by 3/3/97, 1500 on 11/12/00, 1600 on 26/11/01. 1700 on 30/9/02. 1800 on 10/9/03, 1900 on 11/10/04 and 2000 on 24/12/06. 1999 was my best year ever, with 150 quarters, (108 as conductor). I am a firm believer in the value of quarter peals to give ringers more experience. They are long enough to give a good feeling for what has to be rung without being physically tiring to most people. If you don't ring that many quarters because you don't get asked - do the arranging yourself! Two or three quarters and a drink in a nice country pub is a great way to spent a summer's afternoon and evening - especially if someone if chauffeuring you around!
